Heat Sinks & Thermal Management

High Temp Heat Sinks

Many materials work effectively for low temperature heat sink applications but for high temperature situations designs can be more complicated. Heat sinks can be active or passive. Companies such as Cooligy provide very sophisticated automated active heat sinks. Heat sinks can be active in various ways but flowing cooled fluid through channels is common. Use of fans in conjunction with heat sinks is also very common, particularly in electronics and computer applications.

For high temperature applications, melting can be a sticky subject (pun intended). One must select a material suitable for use in high temperature environments. Some popular choices include copper tungsten, BeO, AlN, SiC, AlSiC, CuMo, W and more. Passive metallic high temp heat sinks should be plated with nickel, gold or another suitable metal to limit reactivity and preserve the sinks.
