Heat Sinks & Thermal Management |
What materials are used for heat sinks? Common materials include aluminum, copper, silver, CuW, Mo, tungsten, AlN, BeO, SiC and others. Is diamond a good heat sink? Yes, very good. Diamond is not as common due to the expense but it is the best heat sink material. What is the rate of thermal conductivity for CuW? The rate depends on the alloy concentration but in general, 150 Watts per meter Kelvin at room temperature. Should heat sinks be plated? Plating helps protect the material from reactions with the environment at elevated temperatures. Plating is recommended for many applications. Common plating techniques are nickel and gold for high end applications. Can CuW heat sinks be nickel and/or gold plated? Yes, several suppliers provide the service. |
